Freaky Stuff - Unexplained Knocks by Amaleen Ison

Freaky Stuff - Unexplained Knocks

Have you ever been unable to sleep because of strange sounds? Lying in a bed in the dark seems to amplify every little noise. The rattle-clunk of a central heating system, the tick-tick-tick of an expanding hot water pipe, even the innocuous thud of neighbours moving about in an adjoining house can conjure terrible imaginings.

But have you ever heard three distinct, unexplained knocks? I have, and it scared the bejeezus out of me.

At the time, my husband worked the graveyard shift. No knight in shining armour for me. I’d just retired to bed, snuggled under the duvet, and sunk into that peaceful place between awake and asleep.

Three deep, rhythmic knocks sounded against my bedroom door. The noise jerked me to full consciousness. I flicked on the bedside lamp and armed myself with a photo frame – the only weighty object within arm’s reach. Then, with Kung-Fu Panda finesse, I flung open the door and crashed into the hallway, roaring and flinging my arms like nunchucks.

Nothing. No one. I checked the entire house. Twice. Unless my cats had grown knuckles, or my guinea-pigs had discovered how to unlock their cage, navigate a flight of stairs and wallop my door, there was no explanation for the noise.

Apparently, I’m not alone in my experience. Numerous people claim to have heard three knocks at night. Not necessarily on a door, sometimes a window, headboard, or wall. There are many theories about the cause, but the most commonly held belief is that the knock carries a warning from a spirit – a supernatural nudge to take extra care. Of course, there are more sinister hypotheses (aren’t there always?) that talk of mischievous demons and prophesised death. But I’m a glass half full girl. I’ll take a guardian angel over an evil spirit any day, and if he has washboard abs and smouldering eyes, even better.

I didn’t experience anything terrible after the incident and nobody died, so I can only assume that my midnight visitor had good intentions. Thank goodness.
I’d love to hear if anyone else has experienced a similar event. Have you ever heard three knocks at night or other bizarre noises that gave you the heebie-jeebies?

The more I get to know you, the more you freak me out. Please don't start saying that you see dead people! Great post, Amaleen. Knock, knock, knock ...

I once experienced something similar, whilst staying in a converted stable block. As an alternative explanation, maybe it wasn't anything external to you, but connected with the return of the astral body? Check out 'Projection of the Astral Body' by Sylvan Muldoon and Hereward Carrington, if it's still available.

I sometimes get jarred awake by a deep male voice with a slight southern drawl saying my first name. It's loud, and I find it difficult to convince myself it's from a dream, but the dogs don't react. My partner doesn't stir. Still...

It doesn't sound like a warning, and I actually don't mind when it happens now that I recognize the voice as my dad's.

This is why I liked having a cat. When there was some freaky noise, I could repeat over and over, "It's just the cat. It's just the cat." Even if it clearly wasn't. Our house makes all the weird noises that old houses do...but the weirdest is the sound of someone going up and down the steps. The other day my daughter asked me, "Were going up and down the stairs all night?" Um, no, I was sleeping.

That's very strange indeed. Perhaps there's something about the number 3 also. My wife, a Missouri farm girl, told me years ago that when a mother hen had chicks and she sensed danger, she would give three quick clucks. The chicks would immediately scurry under her for protection. You don't have any chickens, do you?

I can't say that anything I couldn't explain has ever happened to me, but you KNOW how I feel about that guardian angel :D

Sharon, who's there?
Derek, thank you for your suggestion to research the astral body. As soon as I've finished writing this comment, I'm going to Google it.
Keith, it must be lovely to hear your father's voice. How comforting.
Kathy, what an interesting house you live in. Have you ever done any research into its history?
Adam, I agree. The number three is significant, but that's a whole other post :-)
Ruth, yes. Dreamy guardian angels. Nothing more to say.

Actually, I did hear three loud knocks one night on our 100 year old house. Woke me up from a deep sleep. Told my husband there was someone at the door. He checked. Nope. Went back to bed. A moment later, all hell broke loose. Seems the three loud knocks was a car flipping end over end down the highway that runs in front of our house. Landed in the middle - then a semi came along and tipped over in order to avoid the car.

I'll take ghosts any time to that kind of experience, believe me!

That is some freaky stuff. I had to chant, "There are no such things as ghosts!" So scary, I loved it.
